To the 17th
Century philosopher and scientist Descartes is attributed the statement,
“I think therefore I am.”
Over
against this, certain 20th Century existentialists have asserted, “I
am therefore I think.”
Both these
statements are essentially anthropocentric – regarding humankind as the central or
most important element of existence.
Against
this, the Judeo-Christian position, based on Genesis 1:26 and Exodus 3:14, is
the following theocentric statement:
